Lest We Forget: Aretha Franklin Sings Opera

Following Luciano Pavarotti’s last-minute cancellation due to illness, with barely 20 minutes’ notice, Aretha Franklin stunned the 1988 Grammy audience with soulful interpretation of Puccini’s aria from “Turandot”. And BIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIITCH! She B-ROUGH-T it!  I had this recorded ona VHS tape as a kid and I would watch it over and over again and it still beings a joyful tear to my eye. When Aretha dressed in a typical crazy diva carpet dress and fur muff (cause that Grammy theater is COLD boo boo) hits that final high note….GAAAAAAAAAAAAG!  Let any other diva today even try to do something this fierce. This is why she is not just The Queen Of Soul, she’s the QUEEN OF OVAHNESS!
